Where it gets interesting to me is anchoring those monster mythos in a somewhat plausible reality, like M. Night Shamalan did with Signs in the alien / demon comparison.

I have never read him, but I used to play a role playing game based on his work. Yeah, role playing nerd here. Anyway, the idea of losing one's sanity is a big part of the game. I'm gonna read it.
